More Curly Douglas Fir Paddles from R C Cross
Blog reader R.C. Cross has submitted more photos of some paddles made with curly Douglas fir. The first one on the left was the paddle previously featured in a post back in 2012. The remaining two are new creations.

The material for the paddle on the far right was from a 2x4. It was joined with a spline of black walnut to make the width. Lovely contrast and stunning grain patterns! Below is a closeup photo of the blades. The grain pattern on the middle blade is very much like the banding patterns on Damascus steel blades. Wow.

In addition, R.C. acquired a curious set of paddles along with a 1917 Old Town Charles River wood canvas canoe. Each paddle has a very large 9 5/8" width blade. R.C. notes that they appear to be factory made but research has turned up a blank on the origins. They are apparently not from Old Town Canoe Company.
The paddles are available for sale and R.C. is accepting offers. If interested, check out his classified ad on the WCHA site with more details, additional photos and contact info.

Splitting Cedar Sheathing
When I made the decision to use rough sawn white cedar lumber for the birchbark canoe's ribs and sheathing, I miscalculated the amount of wood I needed. Resigned to the fact that I'd have to waste another day to drive to the mill where the clear white cedar was purchased, I stumbled on a great find at RONA (Canadian equivalent to Home Depot). Normally these home reno stores are loaded with construction grade lumber, but this time I managed to find some near perfect, clear, straight-grained Western Red Cedar 2x4's AND at 50 off no less!

Straigt grained clear WRC
Sure WRC is not traditional birchbark canoe material but I was forced to use this wood when making the gunwales given that I couldn't get a hold of white cedar at the required length. The darker coloured sheathing might be a nice accent against the pale white cedar ribs, especially after seeing a red cedar planked canoe at the WCHA assembly last summer. Of course 2x4 are actually closer to 1½" × 3½" in dimension, and this worked out well since the sheathing width in my boat is meant to be between 3-3½ inches wide anyway and about 1/8-1/16" thick. Given that splitting is usually done on green cedar wood, the splitting is often more controlled and sheathing even thinner. César Newashish demonstrates the process in César's Bark Canoe, splitting a huge board of cedar over and over again until he ends up with 5 ft long pieces that are paper thin, split right down to a single grain line.
Given that this dimensional lumber has been kiln dried and my wife has expressely forbidden the soaking of any more wood in our bathtub after the making of my canoe model, I figured the best I could do was split each board into 8ths and then shave down the rest with crooked knife or block plane. Here are some pics of the sequence:

Initial split

Two halves

Starting another split with the knife

Following the grain

Quartered pieces; Splitting down to eighths

Final sheathing splits (about 1/8")
Not every 2x4 split this evenly and there are some shorter pieces of scrap that I'll be using for temporary sheathing when the rib bending phase comes. Many of the pieces have a wonderful tone and when laid out on the floor I can begin to visualize what the final boat will look like.

Some of the sheathing blanks laid out
Still a lot more work to do, but I'm optimistic that I'll be paddling this sucker by the late spring.

Ice Paddling
It is a short trip. I put in at Foote Bridge, walking softly and sliding the canoe over the snow, and then over the tilted apron of ice that extended out over and into the water. And when the ice wouldn't hold my weight, I put one knee on the seat of the canoe and pushed off with my other foot, pushing off of whatever it could find until the canoe began to slide into the clear and cold winter waters.

It is calm and the sky clear. The forest and marsh are blanketed with new snow that fell a couple days back in a very windy storm that kept all canoes off of the water. As I paddle down towards the sea, I pass through thin night ice, ice that is barely stiffer than the water it sits on, crushing and dispersing easily with each stroke of the paddle, slowing the canoe not a bit. But, when I get to the well submerged gravel flats, the ice thickens. Here, the river spreads out wide and shallow and without much of a current, thicker ice has formed and collected with the changing of the tides. I push through and over it using my old Sawyer club paddle as a pole when the ice is thick enough to hold. It is a matter of linking open pools and finding the weakest ice. It is not quiet, the canoe focusing the sound of breaking ice in my direction.

I get some open water near the stone arch bridge and I hope that it will continue when I pass under and enter the open marsh land. But, it does not. In fact, the river is more frozen over with a uniform layer of ice that runs about 3/16 of an inch. I can paddle through it, but there is no end to it in sight and I figure it will go that way to one of the big bends, which are another half mile. I turn back and take my time, retracing the same channels that I've opened up, and just enjoying the contrast of snow and ice and marsh and winter forest on a calm and sunny day.

I pass by the Foote Bridge as this upper section is open water, and head further upstream to the tangles. At one of the bends, I flush about 75 mallards. They take off in four shifts, each time impressing me with the amount of noise they make as they go airborne. And when the tangle makes passage difficult, I return to Foote Bridge.
