There's is something about Sparkman & Stephens design #68, the Dark Harbor 20, that draws people to her. Designed in 1932, 21 original boats were constructed. Cala Portals Porto Veile a great place to waste time – Around Mallorca beach by beach

To be assured of a good anchoring spot in Cala Portals you either get there before the day tripping boats arrive or as they're leaving so we were up early on Monday morning to beat the crowd. There was very little wind so we motored the short distance around the corner with Marc and Karen winging about early start. They’d obviously got too accustomed to the sleep ins of the last week or so.

We were beginning to feel like locals here this being our third visit. We were able to drop anchor in our favourite spot just off the beach in the most sheltered corner of the bay. The only difference to our previous stays was a heavy rock breaker and excavator working on a construction site on the hill. So much for the serenity.

This time the wind did what was predicted and while we had some rain and overcast in the morning the sunshine took over for the rest of our stay. As always in Cala Portals it was a case of swim, read, snorkel, tan, a bite to eat, a glass of wine and most of all, relax.
We got word on Tuesday morning that our radio was back at last so we made arrangements to go back to Palma the next day to get it fitted and to have an insurance assessor have a look at the boat so we could arrange repairs.
It may have been a short stay in Cala Portals but it was another good one.

Iris Time
Yellow iris's are in bloom along with some of the lily pads. So while I scoop trash from the windward side of the marsh islands, I am treated to a yellow spatter of iris flowers right at my eye level. Today it is in the 60's with a light wind. I start at Portage Bay, paddle to Union Bay to pick trash and then exit at the South end of Lake Union. But --My first thoughts came as I walked my canoe to the lake and since my hand is well inside the canoe, I guess I can compromise and count it as a view from the canoe. I'm making a sculpture using the plastic debris that I've recovered from the lake. I want to be as green as possible, but the sculpture also has to survive outside in the weather. So, I'm gluing it together with some heavy duty industrial glue. I thought of melting it together, but that brings in the use of fossil fuel - plus the toxicity of melting plastic. Of course, natural fiber cord could hold it all together, for awhile, at which time it would self destruct and end up back in the trash cycle and the message behind the work is lost. Saving the environment will require some compromises also. But, it will also require no compromise on many issues. That is where we will fail as it is human nature to see everything as negotiable. And, Mother Nature is tolerant in the short term, but does not negotiate on the long term.

Quality Time with S
I talk S into a short canoe trip on a very sunny and fine spring day, one that has been long awaited through an unusually cold and snowy winter for this part of the country.
We put in on the Menunketesuck River a good three hours before high tide. The water is low and just barely deep enough at the put-in, but not many yards downstream we find a good deep channel that runs without break. There is a fairly strong wind, one that requires compensation, particularly with S in the bow, her weight something like that of a bird. At this tide level we hug the windward shore when possible, the three feet of exposed bank sheltering us from the wind.
At the first bend, two osprey have reclaimed the artificial nest box and it looks like they will be there for the season. After the second bend, where the houses end and the marsh and forest take over, a pair of hawks is soaring. A second pair of osprey have taken position on the nest box near the railroad. If there are any egrets around, we don't see them. At this tide level they might be feeding elsewhere for the time being.
S agrees that the scale of the landscape should make for a spectacular trip when the leaves change in the fall, but she also adds that it will be good to see the marsh and forest change through the seasons.
It is supposed to be a short trip and when continuing presents us with a return trip into the teeth of the wind, we turn back.
