In the Maine Woods Paddle Photo
In the Maine Woods (1905 Edition) has a wonderful full-page vintage photo (p.92) of a guide and sport after a successful deer hunt...

Scalloped Grip Closeup
Unfortunately the blade isn't visible in the photo, but the grip area seems identical to a Guide's paddle found on this site's archive page originally advertised by Gould Auctions in Maine.

In the Maine Woods 1909 Paddle Flex
An article entitled "Exploring Maine's Waterways" in the 1909 Edition of In the Maine Woods features a great pic of some guides with lashed canoes transporting a bulky item. What got my attention is the clear picture of the standing stern guide putting his weight behind the stroke. Check out the paddle flex under the strain.

Over the years I've moved away from stiffer paddles and have started to enjoy paddles with quite a lot of flex - not everyone's cup of tea for sure. Last year, I tried to make another paddle for tripping with a piece of Sassafras given this wood's flexible properties and relatively straight grain. It didn't end well with the paddle breaking right below the grip.
I've got another Sassafras blank cut from separate stock and am hoping to get started on that for the upcoming paddling season. It is a narrow shafted (1") twin of the c. 1900 Penobscot Replica also completed last year.

Paddle Art at the Abbe Museum Maine
The Abbe Museum in Maine apparently held a Paddle Art auction in August of this year as part of its 80th anniversary celebrations. Nearly 2 dozen full sized paddles (all with ottertail style blades) were decorated by local artists. Some were quite over the top with a modern art flair. Below are three that I particularly enjoy - I guess I tend to favour the more traditional types of motifs. Clicking each image will take you to the info page on the museum's site:

Stanley Neptune, Penobscot

Jo "Hugga" Dana, Penobscot

Maine Canoe Symposium

The Maine Canoe Symposium is one of my favorite things. Lots of good people, good food, good information and lots of fun. This year's is scheduled June 5-7, and the Peake brothers and Reinhard Zollitsch are featured speakers. It's at Camp Winona, Bridgton, Maine. For details, go here.

In the Maine Woods Historic Poling Pics
Can't seem to get enough of the online editions of In the Maine Woods. The 1917 Edition has some great photos of some canoe poling. Here's one from Page 70. Check out the crazy bend on the pole as the Guide works the canoe upstream on the Moose River...

Another nice shot in a really tight stream from the earlier 1904 Edition...

A crazy action shot ascending rapids well beyond my abilities found in the 1910 Edition...

And one more showing some work around the shoreline shallows on the Penobscot (1908 Edition). You can just make out the wanigan in one of the canoes...
