Canada Day Paddle Gear Review

Happy Canada Day to all my fellow Canadians! Got to take the canoe out into the lake in overcast conditions to celebrate our nation's birthday on the water.

Also took the time to test out a new bit of gear - an ultralight water filtration system called the Sawyer Squeeze. It consists of a plastic dirty water bag and a 0.1 micron hollow fiber filter that screws onto the bags threads. It's been reviewed by backpackers before but haven't seen it done for the paddling crowd yet. Here is the bundle in the hull...

The two components of the system side by side. The bag has handy instructions printed right onto it in case you forget the order of things....

Basically you dip the bag into a water source, in this case the deepest sections of my cottage lake, and wait to fill up. The collapsible design of the bag with its narrow threaded opening means the bag won't fill completely, but I helped it along by blowing the bag full of air before submerging. Here's a shot leaning over the gunnels to fill up...

The filter screws onto the threaded opening and with a gentle squeeze water starts flowing through the filter system...

Pop open the flow valve on the top and you're good to go for a quick drink....

I ended up using the supplied 16oz bag and there is no way that this fills up to capacity when trying to submerge in a body of water. The kit I got contains a medium (1L) and large (2L) size bag but I don't fully trust their capacities either. Still, the threaded section is pretty standard so an empty plastic bottle would also work. I found it very convenient to keep in the boat and to quickly pause to stay hydrated. I can see the advantages of this over having to pump water on route. The manufacturer has openly said the bags are not very tough, so extreme squeezing cause the seams to burst, but so far most of the reviews I've read on the product have been positive. My quick experience here has confirmed this will be a key bit of gear in my kit.

Also took some video of trying out this system to show how easy it is to use while bobbing up and down on a wavy lake. Here's the unedited footage...

July 5th Update: Bryan H of Paddling Light has also reviewed this piece of gear. Check out his more detailed analysis HERE

Dallas tripping

My eyes snapped opened at 5:00 am. It's Saturday morning in San Diego, and I'm heading back to Sarasota after the NMEA conference. Marine electronics propaganda is secured. My scattered clothing is gathered, and hung in the bag. A final sweep of the room ensures I haven't left anything behind. I head down to the lobby to check out, and grab a coffee. I'm doomed, and don't know it yet.

The San Diego Sheraton is right next door to the airport, and I'm whisked there in less than five minutes. Finding an empty ATMesque check in computer my e-ticket number gets scanned in. There's my seat assignment alright, and it sucks. The dreaded center seat in which it's guaranteed you will be squashed in-between a 300 lb professional wrestler, and a mom holding an infant that is crying nonstop and needs its diaper changed. Despite the fact I had purchased the ticket five weeks before the flight, the coveted aisles had been booked. I study the remaining options and what's this? An exit row aisle seat is available. That's great, it means if there is an accident I'm the first one out the door, but it requires paying another $27.50 to get it. Grimacing, I swipe my card, and acquire it, a most fortuitous decision it turns out.

I wait patiently for boarding. "We're boarding our super deluxe platinum members, and service men and women in uniform. Gold card holders, and passengers with small dogs in strollers may now board. We are now welcoming aboard our advantage plus members and all one eyed passengers. Silver plated club members may board at any time. Now boarding group one. I stare at my ticket and sigh. I'm group four.

Digressing for a moment, wheeled handled luggage has become an epidemic anathema. This is the direct result of airlines squeezing every penny out of every passenger. These things are cleverly designed to fit every criteria for carry on baggage, while taking up the maximum amount of space. So instead of paying $25.00 to check a bag, zillions use these things instead completely stuffing the overhead compartments.

I can still hear the drone. "Place your luggage in the overhead compartment wheels first." What passengers hear is, "Put the bag in sideways." This insures only two of these things fit in the compartment instead of three. I'm sure the cargo hold below is nearly empty.

Back to the saga. I finally get to board. I always have this image of the plane in my head. I'm walking through first class. There is the white grand piano. Cocktails, and canapés are being served. As I enter the steerage section I see the rows of cargo nets strung up on the green anodized aluminum ribs with the desperate masses hanging onto them. The plane is packed to the max, we push back, turbines wind up, we taxi out, and shortly we're wheels up for a three hour flight heading for Dallas.

The three hours pass, and there is an announcement stating there is a weather hold due to a thunder storm in Dallas, and we will be circling for a while. I hunch down and go back to my book. More than an hour passes, and another announcement. We are getting low on fuel, there is still a weather ground hold, and we will be landing in Oklahoma City to refuel.

I've been to the Will Rodgers World airport before. It's a nice little airport that is distinguished by being one of the very few named after someone who died in a airplane crash. But I won't see it today. We stop on the tarmac, and the engines shut down. I check the time. I have been sitting on the plane for about five hours now, but the three hour tarmac delay rule timer is now running.

A fuel truck pulls up and we are now laden with lots of jet A. An hour more passes, and a announcement from the cockpit says, the ground stop has been lifted. Fasten your seat belt signs light up, and everyone settles back into their seats. The engines spin up, and then shut down. Great, we now have a mechanical fault. The back door opens, and a mechanic boards, goes to the cockpit. Hands are wildly gesticulating, and the mechanic leaves, and comes back, and leaves, and comes back. About an hour later the engines restart, and then the bad news. The weather ground stop in Dallas is back on.

The insurrection was started by.... I'll just describe her as a older very imposing and haughty women. She starts walking around in the aisle loudly decrying the state she finds herself in, and demanding to know just what the airline was going to do about it. She is joined by several others, and then more lemmings jump into the fray. To be honest, the flight crew had been far less than communicative, and a flight attendant's attempts at humor were worthy of looking for rotten vegetables to throw at her. The plane only had water from their tank left to drink, and the food consisted of rock hard granola bars that shattered like glass the moment you bite into them. There are just enough for everybody to have one crunchy tidbit.

Heeding the hue and cry from aft, a pick up truck with stairs pulled up, and irate passengers are told if you want to disembark, now is the time, and you can't re-board. I decline to leave. You won't get anywhere from this airport late in the day on a Saturday, and driving for four hours to Dallas isn't going to help me either. About twenty passengers abandon ship. A woman complained her kids are hungry, and a flight attendant finds two left over breakfasts to sell her. A notably cheesy event on the part of the airline, who also wouldn't provide free WiFi.

If fifteen more minutes are spent on the ground, the tarmac delay rules will kick in and the airline will have to spend some money to feed and water the onboard cattle. But the engines are started and off we go to Dallas, land, and parked again on the apron for about 45 minutes waiting for a gate. By the time we got to the gate the three hour flight had taken about 9 1/2 hours.

I know I'm screwed, but when I get off the plane and look at the boards there is a flight leaving for Tampa in ten minutes, but it's two terminals away. Pounding up the escalator to the driver-less train I hop on. At the terminal, I tear down to the gate. The plane miraculously is still there, and I wave my ticket at the agent. She looks up and says, "The door is closed." "Well open it." "I can't, we've done it twice already, and we won't do it again." A supervisor hears my strident plea and makes a call to no avail. The agent starts to re-book me for a flight on Sunday morning. Fifteen minutes later the half full plane to Tampa finally pushes back from the gate.

I call Kate, and give her an update. I then call the Hyatt at the airport to see if a room is available. Yikes, because of the weather delays they only have some suites left, and I'm not going to pay that rate, ever! It's now a quarter to nine, I haven't eaten and there is a TGI Friday's in sight. I order a Bourbon, and ask for a menu. "We close at nine, and the grill is being cleaned," says the bartender. "How about pretzel sticks with that beer cheese dip?" Sure we can still do that. I holler as he disappears, "and another bourbon please."

Despite the size of the DFW airport, after 10:30 pm it's a ghost town, and TSA security is shut down. You can leave the terminal, but you won't be able to get back in. Subtracting thousands of people from the place also removes the heat they make, and the temperature drops precipitously. I start to look for a place to hunch down and while away the hours. There must be an old refrigerator box around here some place I can crawl into to sleep.

I've lived in Texas, a state that prides itself in having express lanes built to expedite arriving at death row, but all of a sudden I see trundling down the concourse a golf cart loaded with new blankets and cots. This is a welcomed revelation. Okay, Texas, I'll take back some of the bad things I've said about you over the years.

The rest of the story is a melange of scenes from the movie Terminal, minus Catherine Zeta-Jones. I find a reasonably dim spot out of the lime light and make a nest. Kate packed me bourbon miniatures which are always handy on a trip regardless of circumstances. The laptop is plugged in to recharge, and there is good free WiFi service.

I'm dozing in and out for a few hours and then my phone rings to tell me it's five o'clock. I go to the head and wash up as best as can be done, and put on a clean shirt. Coffee and a bagel are found shortly later. The buzz of the traveling hoards starts to increase as the airport inexorably grinds back to life.

This was not the first time I had spent the night in a airport, and a cot was better than sitting in a chair if it had to happen. I have advice for those who are caught in delays, or more extreme cases such as mine. The gate agents are overwhelmed with attempting to re-book thousands of passengers, of which the majority seem to be convinced it was the gate agents personal fault for their plight, and they loudly tell them that.

Being indignant and rude insures you will get on the later flight in the center seat surrounded by homeless people that were given free tickets out of town by the City of Sarasota. I also beat the folks who rented cars to drive to DFW.

However if you're pragmatic, and pleasant, they will work hard to help you, and in my case I was upgraded to business class, just because I was nice to her. I can assure you it wasn't my roughish good looks that cinched it. And thanks Q for the Buc's game tickets, I got in too late to use them, but I did watch the last of the game from your watering hole. Travel time from San Diego to Tampa? Slightly south of thirty hours.

Organizing maintenance manuals

It looked official in it's "Winnebago" bag
UPDATE:  After Winnebago commented on this blog post via Twitter, I reread it and realized I left out our final categories!  I've added them below, and for those who don't find this as fun as I do, ideas on how to decide on YOUR categories.

When we moved onto the boat, my first boat project (after unpacking) was to organize the paperwork, specifically the maintenance manuals.  Luckily, the previous owners had kept everything and they were semi-organized.  However, it turned into a system review for me as I asked "What is this for?" and it was fun for The Captain who said, "Oooh, let me see that!" or "Hey, I was looking for that."  You see, he doesn't have much patience for paperwork, which is where I come in.  Luckily, I brought a bin of sheet protectors, report covers, folders and a hole punch!  I ended up going with three accordion folders organized by system and when The Captain needed something, I was familiar with what was in there and could put my hands on it fast! (I also downloaded electronic copies of all manuals that were available online in case the originals were damaged or--bite your tongue--lost!)

BEFORE:  It LOOKED organized...
When we were looking for an RV, we always asked for/glanced through the manuals, just to get a sense of who the prior owner was.  Did they keep all the manuals in an organized fashion in one place?  Was there a work history we could refer to later?  However, we didn't pore over the manuals the same way The Colonel did for a logbook review while pre-buying an airplane.  When we moved into Odin the Winnebago, there was less need to read all the manuals immediately.  We were relatively familiar with all the systems after living on a boat and there were no big projects we needed to complete prior to launch.  It was filed by six categories (Chassis, Appliances, Electronics, Generator, Plumbing/Drainage, Misc/Warranty).  Of course, the chassis section was the biggest (Caterpillar diesel engine, Freightliner chassis, Allison transmission) and also the most used.  I could never find anything in there (ie. Convection Microwave), despite The Colonel saying, "I know I saw it."  After hearing, "I need to get a copy of the full Caterpillar maintenance manual" for the umpteenth time, I reached in again to take another inventory and came out with a bunch of expired warranty cards.  OK, let's do this!  With The Colonel kicked back with his feet up and a beer in his hand, I got started...

Getting organized
After a couple hours of "What is this?" And "Ooh, let me see that" (and, if you live on a boat or in an RV you've probably heard, "Look.  This graph is fascinating."  I doubt that, honey.), we had 14 piles/categories instead of six.  Lots of things were misfiled including awnings in Generator, appliances in Electronics, and--bonus--when duplicate manuals were filed in different categories.  ("Honey, I found the installation manual but do you know where the maintenance manual is?"  "Um, yeah.  I hid it.  I thought it would be funny.")  Some manuals were loose-leaf and had gotten shuffled.  The trash pile included some limited warranty cards from when the RV was new (2001), several lists of service centers from each component (out of date & available online), and a few copies of manuals in French.  "I don't speak French.  Throw it away."  "But I need to find the English manual first!"

A hand-drawn leveler diagram!
The gems include:
  • A hand-drawn diagram of the leveling system that had been squished to the bottom--(PAGE PROTECTOR) and the knowledge that the leveling system has always been a problem child according to the
  • Invoice folder of previous maintenance--answering the question of how long Odin had been sitting before we adopted him (last Work Order was September 2015 at a Cat Service Center in NY.  Filter changes done at a service center in SC in 3/2015 answering the question of what needed to be serviced before we leave for CO!)  A typed list of every upgrade done since manufacture! The previous owner's name was Earl Gates and the first owner was Ronald Dates--"That's funny.  Gates.  Dates.  Get it?"
  • While reviewing why there was three "Knowing your Chassis" documents, discovering this was the handout from the much coveted Freightliner course (that The Colonel couldn't get into because it was full for the season).  SCORE!

Notes from the Freighliner course
Off to the store to buy an accordion file (The Colonel requested one big one that would still fit in the same cabinet behind the Captain's chair), page protectors, report covers and a hole punch.

Important loose pages were put in page protectors.

Several components had multiple manuals including installation, maintenance and operator's manual that were consolidated into one report cover per component--now even the Navigator can find the correct manual!

UPDATE:  Deciding on categories.  I ended up with the following categories (subject to change based on the ability to find things in the future):  General (original brochure, original equipment list, original weight info), History (invoices), Catepillar (engine), Freightliner (chassis), Allison (transmission), HVAC, Generator, Electrical, Electronics, Galley (microwave, coffee maker, sink water filter), Plumbing, Awnings (Yes, we have three different style awnings!), Wiring Diagrams (bound book but thick), Tow equipment, Misc.

UPDATE:  If sorting through what you have and creating piles didn't make categories obvious, look for:
1) Big piles:  if you forget what you're looking for by the time you flip through the pile, consider splitting into another section, ie. Our "Chassis" section included multiple manuals so we split it into engine/chassis/transmission.
2) If a system like "plumbing" is only one page, consider consolidating with another small category.
3) YOU are the one that has to be able to find a manual, so make up your own categories, ie. our "Electrical" section (should be inverter, electrical panel, etc) also contained a lot of "Electronics" (TV manual, satellite manual, tv antenna) making in unwieldly, so I split it in two and made sure they were right next to each other to avoid misfiling in the future.  There was also some generator info in "Electrical" so I placed it next in line.

AFTER:  The finished project with 15 categories
Of course after I presented my finished project to The Colonel for his approval, I opened the cabinet to find all towing manuals still in the plastic.  DANG IT!

Maybe we think this is important because of our aviation background.  Or maybe we're geeks.  Even if your manuals look organized, I recommend this project.  They are now ordered in a fashion that makes sense to US and either of us can stick our hand in & pull out what we need, on top of the fact we both have a good sense of what is in there.  It's also an opportunity to review the systems with my mechanic husband in a casual environment, instead of when things fail and all questions are answered with "the look"!

East River

I set out from near the sea riding a flood tide that won't top out for three more hours.  But, since it is a high high tide the current is a good 1/2 mile per hour or so and the spartina speeds by.

The birds are quite active this morning with ospreys soaring or protecting their nests, most of which have a downy chick or two in them at this time.  The willets are more animated than usual, a sign that their nests are at some critical time.  They usually ignore osprey and egrets, but today they seem a bit more aggressive, flying out and calling out their warning until the larger birds have moved off.  At the first big bend, all of them are in a tizzy and I suspect that there might be a four legged predator somewhere out in the marsh grass.
willet in the spartina
Cedar Island

I spot a few glossy ibises as I head up the Neck River and into Bailey Creek.  And then it was up through the circuitous Sneak and back into the East River.  The middle marsh is relatively calm compared to the lower marsh.  As I near the Rockpile, which is well submerged already, I close up on two kayakers.  They are talking and dipping paddles.  By coincidence we reach the big bend with the island in it and when they take the outside, I take the inside speeding past them.  I am glad that they are out here enjoying the river, but I am also glad to not have to hear or see them.  In a minute or two I can return to my undisturbed conversation with the birds.

seaside sparrow
Above the stone arch bridge the marsh goes to fresh water.  Cattails replace the spartina, the willets disappear - the terrain not providing the open view safety that they desire.  But, I begin to push several kingfishers up the river.  They perch and then fly short hops when I get two near, the rattling call alerting me if I'm not watching them.  I flush a yellow crowned night heron and then another.  This is, of course, why I sped past the two kayakers.  First one up the river, especially the first quiet one up the river, sees the most wildlife.
The Sneak

I turn back when I get to the jungle - two bends up from Foote Bridge.  A hawk screams from high above.  I see a hawk right at this spot more often than not when I am here.  The wind comes up in my face on the return.  I pass back the way I came.  It has been too long since I was here.

When I take out I run into T and meet his wife J.  I saw them following me out through the Sneak...It's rare to see anyone that knows of the passage.  T reminds me that we met a year ago and that I tipped him off about that secret passage.  A nice chat to finish off the day.
