Design 794 Ciocca II

Ciocca II is a 6-meter racing yacht. She was constructed of wood by Cantieri Baglietto of Italy and launched in 1947. The boat was based in great part on the shape of the very successful 6-meter Goose, design #243. However changes were made and the boat was tank tested at the Davidson Laboratory at the Stevens Institute in Hoboken, New Jersey. Obviously the transoms are significantly different.
Here are the plans.

The story I have heard is that the boat lay at the bottom of a lake in Italy for years and was then raised by someone snagging the mast head. The boat then spent years on the hard at a yard in England.
She has recently been purchased and is currently for sale by the Boothbay Harbor Shipyard of Maine. Click here for more information. I am sure if my story is wrong I will be corrected!
Here is her current condition.

Design 1590 Scatoulista II

This beautiful 5.5-meter racing yacht was built by the Corsier-Port shipyard of Geneva, Switzerland. She was launched in 1960 and is one of only ten 5.5-meters designed by the firm. It is interesting to note that of the ten, four consecutive boats were built by the same yard between 1960 - 1962. They are designs #1590 (Scatoulista II), #1633 (Aramis X), #1696 (Athena) and #1731 (Roy).
The boat was built for the Aga Khan (IV), a repeat customer for Sparkman & Stephens. Scatoulista II (SUI-041) was constructed of carvel planked mohagany.
The boat is now named Laetitia and makes her home in the Netherlands. Like many classic 5.5-meters, she has been retrofitted with a separate spade rudder.
Here are the plans.

Design 2162 Beagle II

This robust looking trawler was built in Venezuela and launched in 1975. The design brief was for a strong, rugged hull with simple, straightforward construction (frames are sawn), deep Vee hull, ample flare and excellent natural ventilation plus all of the accoutrements one would expect to find on a fishing vessel: fish fighting chairs, fish freezer box, etc.
Please note the image above is during her shake down cruise and the boat is missing railings, navigation mast, tender and tender crane.
The boat seems to have a commercial finish which can be seen in this detailed image. Note the lack of fairing on the topsides.

Here is an image which shows the added railings, mast, tender and crane. We don't seem to have an overall profile shot of the completed boat.

Here are the plans.

And a few interior images.

The boat is powered by twin General Motors 12V71 diesels generating 480 hp each and turning 33" diameter wheels for a top speed of 16 knots and a cruising speed of 14 knots. Maximum range is 670 nm at 10 knots.

Design 1852 Matuta II

This beautiful canoe stern motorsailer was built of wood by the Krogerwerft Shipyard of Rendsburg, Germany. She was launched in 1966. She is heavily built and designed with cruising comfort in mind. Her shoal draft reflects her owner's desire to use her in Southern Waters.
As Chief Inspector, Rod Stephens performed most of the sea trials of S&S boats around the world. Here is a very rare sequence of images (double click for zoom) of Rod in Germany doing sea trials. Someone snapped him arriving by ferry, being picked up, onboard speaking with the yard workers (and probably the owner), and taking a trip to the masthead which was his habit.

You can always tell the German shipyards due to the naval vessels at the yards that were built alongside the yachts.
Here are the plans.

Design 1428 Pavane II

This handsome motorsailer was built of steel by Abeking & Rasmussen of Germany for an American customer, Uncas A. Whitaker. Whitaker was a repeat client. Click here to see his next boat.
She has a number of interesting design features. The most noticeable is the location of her engine room. While this allowed a much lower profile that would have been possible amidships, it must have caused some challenges in terms of sound attenuation being adjacent to the owner's cabin.
Notice the secondary "backing rudder" located just forward of the propeller and above the propeller shaft. The feature comes from river tow boats in Europe and includes independent controls and is used to assist when backing into a slip.
Also note the two steering stations: one on the bridge deck and one in the aft cockpit. The after station is used primarily when fishing.
Pavane II is powered by a single General Motors 4-71 diesel coupled to a Walters v-drive with 2:1 reduction producing a cruising speed of 11 knots under power. She was launched in 1959.
Here are the plans.
